Neutralized instances of SCP-419-JP, remaining in Easter Island.

Item#: SCP-419-JP

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-419-JP instances are currently contained in a low-risk object containment chamber of Site-81██. Access and experiments require prior approval of 3 Senior Researchers who are in charge of biological objects, and are to be performed in the presence of at least 1 researcher.

In order to suppress the informations about the existence of civilization that had used SCP-419-JP, it is to be officially announced that all of recovered documents were lost. Cover story regarding the decline of said civilization resulting from deforestation and extinction of natural resources is to be disseminated to the general public and the archeological societies.

Description: SCP-419-JP was found in 1930s when the government of the Republic of Chile had considered the sale of Easter Island1. Based on the recovered records, it has believed that SCP-419-JP caused the decline of Easter Island civilization that is described below. Despite it has theorized that almost 70 instances of SCP-419-JP was existed in the past, most instances were destroyed or neutralized. The Foundation recovered only 5 instances with anomalous properties, and 2 of those were neutralized during experiments at a later date. Currently, 2 active instances and 1 dormant instance of SCP-419-JP have contained.

An SCP-419-JP instance is a statue that is made from tuff. Material analysis have shown it was somehow constructed before the indigenous Polynesian people immigrated to Easter Island in the 4th century. While the appearance of SCP-419-JP instance is commonly known as "Moai"2, there is an unknown organism inside. Organism transforms into tuff when it exposed to air in its inert status, neutralizing SCP-419-JP's anomalous properties at the same time. Thus, disassembly of SCP-419-JP has been unsuccessful.

SCP-419-JP activates when limestone eyeball-shaped parts are fitted to its eye sockets. Although these parts are designated as SCP-419-JP-A for convenience' sake, these are non-anomalous limestone; correctly-shaped non-anomalous limestone will also trigger the anomalous effect.

Upon activation, the lower half of SCP-419-JP's face melts and becomes highly adhesive. When an object touches the melted part it is held firmly in place and then drawn into SCP-419-JP via peristalsis. If the target is an inanimate object or already dead, SCP-419-JP will return to its "melted" state once again. If the target is a living organism, SCP-419-JP will return to its original condition and start the preparation for the "Production". In the case that SCP-419-JP-A is removed from SCP-419-JP's eye sockets during above process, SCP-419-JP will return to its original condition and its target will disappear. In any case, the target will become impossible to recovery once it was absorbed into SCP-419-JP.

SCP-419-JP in "Production state" reorganizes the absorbed creature’s biological structure. Reorganized subject become capable of producing fertilized eggs3 outside the body and becoming pregnant with genetically identical offsprings (SCP-419-JP-B). This reorganization applies regardless of gender, and CT scanning have shown that the pregnancies simultaneously occur even in multiple parts other than the abdomen or the womb. SCP-419-JP-B instance grows up ██,███ times faster than non-anomalous fetus, and once becoming capable of sexual reproduction, it will be discharged from SCP-419-JP via childbirth. The time taken to this process differs for each species, and the size of subject is directly proportional to amount of production. In the case of humans (Homo sapiens), SCP-419-JP will discharge the first SCP-419-JP-B instance █ hours after the activation; then, it will continue producing 50-100 instances of SCP-419-JP-B for approximately ███ hours. At the end of production, SCP-419-JP-A disappears and SCP-419-JP returns to its normal state. Internal investigation failed to find the absorbed creature - it has believed that the subject will eventually die or be consumed for production.

It has been proved that SCP-419-JP consumes the surrounding earth during the "Production" process. SCP-419-JP only absorbs soil with a certain proportion of water and minerals; sand, gravel and rubble are not consumed. Although it was confirmed SCP-419-JP absorbs the soil through the contact point of its body and the earth, the amount of energy derived from the soil is clearly insufficient to produce SCP-419-JP-B instances - the detail of this energy conversion is still unknown. If SCP-419-JP is prevented from absorbing soil, the production of SCP-419-JP-B is greatly decreased and SCP-419-JP returns to inactivated status earlier than usual.

It is worth noting that SCP-419-JP needs a cooling-off period between productions. If SCP-419-JP continued the production over 4,000 days without interval of 20 days or more between an end of production and next activation, SCP-419-JP will become dormant for a long period. While it has believed that the dormant state can last for several decades or even several hundred years, the exact period of dormancy and the limit of continuous production are not clear because a long time will be required for the experiments. It has been confirmed that absorbed subjects are kept alive within dormant SCP-419-JP instances and production is restarted immediately at the end of the dormant period.

Addendum: The following is the history of Easter Island that was examined on the basis of initially recovered records.

The dawn of civilization
It has been identified that the Polynesians had been conducted the experiments of SCP-419-JP, that was found on Rano Raraku4 after they immigrated to Easter Island in the 4th century. They interpreted the production of SCP-419-JP-B as a grace from their ancestors' spirits and had performed a religious ceremony once a month for breeding the livestocks by the anomaly's property. They gradually developed their own religious culture, and started making the ancestors' statues that is modeled after SCP-419-JP around the 7th century.

The development and the decline
It has estimated that the ancestor worship continued for about 600 years. However, with the improvements in their living standards, the islanders also started to breed the slaves in order to provide additional labor forces for the creation and transport of Moai.

The first immigrants had understood the anomaly's nature and established a cooling‐off period to avoid dormancy, but it changed as time went by; the population increased, and the formerly religious ceremony of SCP-419-JP was performed more frequently for producing the livestock. The islanders had used SCP-419-JP instances earnestly, without knowing about the long dormant state.

Once an instance became dormant, the other instances shouldered an additional load in place of it. The frequency of use was inescapably increased - in this way, SCP-419-JP instances became dormant state one after another. The islanders faced a critical shortage of food; the number of livestock dropped sharply, the rich soil was already consumed by SCP-419-JP, and the production of slaves had caused a population explosion. There was not even sufficient resources to construct ships to escape the island. The islanders combated with each other for the resources, and worse, some record have shown they started the cannibalism. In the middle of warfare and confusion, they scrambled for active instances of SCP-419-JP, and sometimes destroyed those before the enemy takes it away. Likewise, most of dormant instances were destroyed.

In search of a solution, the islanders had quarried the material from Rano Raraku, the origin of SCP-419-JP, to construct non-anomalous statues resembling SCP-419-JP. Many incomplete Moai statues were abandoned on Rano Raraku, upon the last stages of the Easter Island civilization.

The reset of civilization
It is theorized that all of the inhabitants were extinct by the conflicts and starvation. After several decades of blank period, dormant SCP-419-JP instances became active once again and was discharged the small number of slaves and livestock. Those SCP-419-JP-B instances are recognized as the "native islanders" on the public records. When the European found Easter Island in 1722, they were living at a stone age level due to the reset of civilization.

This is a very rare, ironic case - the civilization didn't collapse by the anomaly. It was destroyed because they had come to depend on the objects' anomalous properties.
